According to leader-member exchange (LMX), the nature of the exchange that develops between superiors and subordinates is different for every superior-subordinate dyad. Attributions both influence the development of the exchange and are influenced by it. For example, in cases of dealing with subordinates' poor performance, managers tend to make less internal attributions towards those in-group subordinates than those out-group subordinates. However, the research described above only focus on the dimension of locus which is an old tradition in the study of attribution theory. But the new approach of this field is responsibility attribution which gives a new angle of view to the judgment of behavior responsibility by applying attributional theory to the analysis of responsibility of negative behavior. In order to make a full understanding of the psychological mechanism and following conduct measures (including negative conduct and positive conduct) of Chinese managers when they deal with their subordinates' poor performance, this study combined responsibility attribution theory and leader-member exchange theory and then explored the relationships between the leader-member exchange and responsibility attribution. Besides, at beginning of this research, the researcher has also developed a new leader-member exchange questionnaire which is mainly used to investigate managers or superiors perceived leader-member exchange (SLMX). Due to previous questionnaires are mostly developed for subordinate while leader-member exchange is a dyadic exchange between subordinate and his superior, this questionnaire will help a lot to future research in this field.This research has been divided into two stages.
