Since 1980, the foreign hotel management groups have been introduced into the Chinese market. With the economic development in China, the foreign hotel management groups have been developing very well. For example, Marriot International, Starwood Group, Four Season Group, Hilton Group, and Shangri-la Group, they have established many branches in China and achieved great success. Their coming has brought many challenges and energy. One hand , the foreign hotel management groups make the Chinese hotels come into a new stage; on the other hand , mainly because of their strong capital and advanced management experience , the foreign hotel management groups have occupied the high level market segment and made profitable business. However, the Chinese hotels only survive in the rest of the market. There is a competition between a giant and a baby. This paper analyzes the causes from four aspects, that is , management philosophy , management style, operation system and the service quality management. At last, we put forward some advice on the reform for the Chinese hotels.From the management philosophy point of view, the Chinese hotels staff have been influenced by the traditional thought -Confucian thought. They think the social interests can take precedence over the operation profits and the group interests over the individual interests .When they go against each other , they always sacrifice the latter's interests . This thought has led to many troubles. During the operations, they lack importance to their staff's feeling and can't stimulate the staff work passion.They can't have normal incentive system for their staff. Finally these shortcoming will lead to the low efficiency. On the contrary, the foreign hotel management groups regard their staff as the important factor in their business. Their concern is how to stimulate their staff's passion to supply the best service to their customers.From the style point of view, the foreign hotel management groups had very clear ideas on the marketing segment. They entered the high level market — the high level business man and the high level travelers. Since the reform , the Chinese hotel had not realized the great demand on the high level . They think the price is too high and nobody can afford it. The Chinese hotel missed the good chance. When they find out this high level market can make a lot of money, they enter it without any hesitation. Due to the fact that the Chinese hotels lack experience and management skills, the state-owned single hotel can't compete against the foreign opponents. We are supposed to adopt a difference competition , otherwise we can't survive the keen competition. Due to the appearance of the holiday economy, traveling for the common people has become the focus. As regards to the new great demand , the Chinese hotel can't miss the good chance for great development. Our marketing segment should be the economical hotel— clean, comfortable and cheap is our target. Up to now, a few chain economical hotels appear in the Chinese market, for instance, in Shanghai, "the star of JinJiang", in Beijing , " Rujia"o They have become some influential in the hotels field. But for the foreign hotel management groups , they can't ignore the new demand definitely. When they realize this low level market can make profits, they will enter this market segment as soon as possible. Take Marriot International as an example, they began their business as a motel operator. They have declared they will enter the Chinese smaller cities. There are two ways to face the foreign opponents. One is to cooperate with them, the other is to compete against them using our own relationship net and low cost.From the service management point of view, the service in the Chinese hotels is characterized by the emotional service. The quality of the service greatly depend on the staffs emotion. So the important progress made by the Chinese hotels is the standardized service. It is hard to stipulate the same standardized service due to the different region, time difference. If the Chinese hotels can't supply the standardized service, they will not survive the keen...
