"It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied." John Stuart Mill's happiness theory based on the distinction between quality and quantity in pleasures. Then he inherited and rebuilt hedonism of Bentham. The meaning of happiness has been expanded, which not only contains pleasure of sentient, but also contains virtue, justice, liberty, and so on. He also had argued the utilitarian essence abour virtue,justice,liberty. Then, his theory of happiness was more rational, it insisted on the principle of utilitarianism and absorbed the factor of deontology The paper mainly explains Mill's happiness theory from horizons of life philosophy, social philosophy and politic philosophy and the highly realistic significant for modern human to pursue happiness and construct harmony society.
