The Comparative Study In Historical Materialism Of Chen Duxiu And Li Dazhao

In this paper, the author makes a comparative study in Historical Materialism of Chen Duxiu and Li Dazhao. First, the author analyzes the same points during the two men's spread and use of Historical Materialism; then, the author compares the differences between the two men's Historical Materialism from three aspects: the opportunity to Historical Materialism, attitude of Historical Materialism and using Historical Materialism to guide revolutionary practice: Chen Duxiu believe in the Western Evolution, so he accepted Historical Materialism as the most advanced Western culture, which led him take the bookishness attitude to Historical Materialism and use the Historical Materialism mechanically and doctrinally, without taking the Chinese culture and reality into account, which made him abandon revolutionary leadership and have an error in judgment in the consciousness and strength of the Chinese working class and peasants. Li Dazhao believed in the harmoniousness of the eastern and western cultures before he accepted Historical Materialism. And it is because of such an opportunity that he made the first interest in the Russian October Revolution and became the first person to believe in and to spread Historical Materialism in China. Furthermore, Li Dazhao took the traditional Chinese culture into account and made transformation and innovation to Historical Materialism on the grounds of Chinese reality. He attached importance to the will and the spirit strength of people, recognized the most important reality in China---problem of farmers and organizing farmers to make proletarian revolution, realize naturalization of Marxism in China preliminarily.
