The Social And Economic Impact Of HIV/AIDS In Ruili County Of Yunnan Province

Background: In the year 1989, a group from frontier injection drug abused people was found get HIV infected in Yunnan province , it is the very fisrt time in this province found HIV infected people, then it quickly spread throughout the 16 states and 129 counties of the province, and spread from the drug abused people to the sex abused peole then to the general people, Yunnan province have become one of the HIV/AIDS most seriously prevailed provinces. In order to get the informations of the influence that HIV prevailed have brought to the human health and society and economy over these years in the province , Ruili county, where the first group of HIV infected people was found and HIV prevailed most seriously now, was selected into investigate .Objective: Though collecting related materials and anlysis the current datas, combine with qualitation and quantitation pilot study ,we explore the influence that HIV/AIDS have brought to the individuals,families and the society since 1989 , providing the government scientific suggestions when HIV prevention and cure related policies need institued .Method: Though case-contorl method investigateing the impact on individuals and families, using the category matching method, randomize select the HIV infected households then according the principle of category matching, select the drug abused but without HIV infected households and the general households. Using observation method and qualitation discussing methods investigate the impacts on society.Results: The current family scales of the HIV infected households are less than the general households, P<0.01. The HIV infected households' divorce rate and widow rate are higher than the non-infected households , P<0.01. The yearly income of the HIV infected households are smaller, while the yearly expense difference with no statistical significance; the contract rate of the household members during the last year have statistical significance P<0.01; the HIV infected household members' contract frequency of illness are highest.The county's total spend on the medical treatments of HIV/AIDS related diseases are 30 million RMB per year, which account 0.23% of the total GDP.The orphans and the elders that the HIV/AIDS brings have become the burdun of the society. In order to control the prevalence of HIV/AIDS ,decrease the hazards it brought, the government have instituted a series of policies , and threw a great amount of money and human resourses. With the distance of self interest draws near to the people living with HIV/AIDS, the matter of discrimination becomes more serious.Conclusion: The HIV-infected is mainly composed by the youth and the middle - aged whose divorce or the loss of work abilities or death will changed the family patterns and structures directly, and will affect the economic status of the family in the mean time;then affect the abilities of looking after elders and raising the children. Meanwhile, HIV/AIDS prevalence have greatly influnced the social ecnomy and caused many social problems. HIV infected people are more easily be look down upon in their communities and their daily life, and with the relationship among people draws near ,the attitude of discrimination become much worsen.Thus, their friend scales shrinked , then enhance the negative effects.
