The 21st century is the century when the Chinese nation is prospering and flourishing. The prosperity of any nation requires the cultivation of its noble national spirit. The national spirit is the spiritual support for a nation to survive and develop. It is not initiated spontaneously inside the nation or simply transplanted from outside. It results from the national consciousness and long-term cultivation. The excellent traditional Chinese culture (TCC) is broad and profound, and the foundation of the Chinese national spirit is solid. The national spirit is rooted in the traditional culture of the nation. Without the excellent traditional culture of the nation, the national spirit will lose its base as well as its source of development. Therefore, the cultivation of national spirit (CNS) needs not only inheritance but also development. Inheritance is inheriting the excellent tradition of national culture. Development is nurturing the contemporary national spirit which caters to the requirement of the era based on the traditional national tradition. At the critical time when the Chinese nation steps into the 21st century, it is of vital realistic significance to strengthen the education of the excellent TCC and the cultivation of the contemporary CNS.This paper consists of four parts. In the first part, the author expounds the connotations of excellent TCC, the cultivation of CNS and their relationships. In the second part, the author mainly traces back to the long history of the education of TCC, the cultivation of national spirit, the precious experiences and the existing problems. In the third part, the author focuses on elaborating the guiding ideology, basic principles and specific measures of cultivating CNS through the education of traditional culture. In the concluding fourth part, the author points out the close relationship between carrying forward and cultivating CNS and promoting the construction of China's modernization. Through the discussion on this issue, the author aims at contributing to constructing the wealthy society in China and realizing the great renaissance of the Chinese nation.
