With knowledge economy arising and developing rapidly, trade secret protection, one of the most popular means of technology protection, is cherished by more and more corporations. Chinese corporations have come to realize the importance of the protection of trade secret. But, in practice, there are a lot of troubles in trade secret protection. Fortunately our governments have realized the serious situation, so they have taken numerously effective methods to defend trade secrets. However, the situation of protection is not as good as plan, because the trade secret protection both in theory and practice are not good enough. Especially the connotation of trade secret is a very basic problem in theory. At the same time, it is considered as the first problem in practice. So how define the connotation of trade secret is an very important issue. It is an effective path that improves the connotation of trade secret by using successful experiences of developed countries in a short time. The United States, one of the developed countries, runs the first in the world about trade secret protection. Under this situation, my paper researches the connotation of trade secret both in the United States and China by contrast and I hope it can do benefit to our country's trade secret protection.At first, the paper recalls and contrasts the two countries in the history of the changes of the connotation of trade secret. Second, the part argues some differences between the United States and China on the how to define connotation of trade secret and how to use them in practice. Last but not least, From the United States experience on how to define connotation of and how to use them in practice, I give some advises in order to improve the development of the connotation of trade secrets in our country.
