Extinction Of Imperial Examination System, The Consequence Of History Development

The paper studyes from the aspects of development history and characteristics of the imperial examination system of each period. The imperial examination system, founded during the Sui and Tang Dynasty had been the main system for the election of all kinds of officials, which had effected great influence on Chinese ancient politics, economy, technology and education. What we should attach more attention to is the influence of foundation, development and improvement of the imperial examination system on the culural consciousness of Chinese people. Due to the closeness, monopolization of resources and unitary development mode of the ancient society under the imperial despotism, the traditional cuture had formed a relatively unique thinking mode of the examination system, formed under which the cultural and civil consciousness had complicatedly and greatly influenced the development of Chinese history and society of that time as well as the ones of one thousand years later. The great influence continues to happen till this day, and what we can be sure is that in the forseeable future the influence will exist continuously, and one of the most direct and obvious influnece is the national college entrance examing system which began after the foundation of new China. From the aspect of the development of the imperial examination system, the paper is to study the inluence of long-held imperial examination system on deep cultural consciousness, and make a brief comparison with the current college entrance examination.The replacement of the system of dominant family with imperial examination system had rendered the scholars a great chance to change their fate. Under the imperial examination system, the scholars could obtain the chance to be officials, which could bring the higher social position and consciousness than the farmers or merchandisers and separate the scholars from the common people to have a statue of noble spirit. Imperial examination system opened a door for the scholars to enter the official society, and had given a dreamy world for them to compile their bright future, which became even more serious especially after the Song Dynasty. Under the long-held imperial examination system, the intellectuals, especially the scholars with low social postions believed firmly in the fairness of the system. However, the imperial examination itself only described a fair myth, which existed only in the people's dream.The current college entrance exam has appeared 3 shortcomings during its appliction: the differential of the examing targets and educating targets, the general examining mode and the demand of talents, and the inadaptability of the quality of the exam and its appendix values. Due to the carrying of too much dissistent, the reform of the examination has met great difficulty, which was from the lower society instead of the upper one. There still exists a great difficulty for the reform or even abolish of the college entrance examination under the condition of unsmooth of the society and low level of the civil living condition.The research of the college entrance exam reform resistence can not avoid the influence of the once long-held imperial examing system, and the influence on the society of today embodies various aspects and is most directly connected with the college entrance examination, which can be generalized into 3 kinds: fair superstition, expecting statue and academics neglect.The investigation of the separate development history of imperial examination system and college entrance examination can show that they have experienced the same road. And the history of imperial examination system of more than 1000 years tells us the discipline of the examination system, and the college entrance exam is no exception.The currently held college entrance examination system isn't actually different from the ancient imperial examination system, which is one of composement of the social administration system that characterizes as sole-center and from upper to the lower. Governed under the system of imperial examination, the common people owned the illusion of having the chance to share the previliege by the intellectual game, which is the imperial examing tradition and the cultural consciousness effected, and the root of the shortcoming and main resistance of the reform. However, every examining system has the process of coming, development, improvement and extincion. With the development of the multi-function of the society and the deepening of the contradictoin of examining system itself, the society will definitely go out of the imperial examining system. At that time, the college entrance system with too much differencies would come back to the original intention of choosing excellent students for colleges, which is also the end of the current college examining system of imperial examining system mode.
