Giddens' Social Democracy Theory And Its Contemporary Significance

As the Cold War ended, the impact of globalization, the pressure of economic stagnation, and the challenge of Neo-liberalism have caused such a great impact that in the 1990s, the British Labor Party, as the representative of the Social Democratic, had made some adjustments in both theory and policy, and advocated "Third Way Politics" theory.The theory transcends traditional division between "left" and "right". It strives to abandon old views and thoughts and establish new pragmatic policies to solve the difficulties. It seeks to revitalize the social democracy by left of centre. The "Third Way Politics" theory has aroused wide debate in the international society and has become popular thought in west developed capitalism countries. As current policy advocacy of Western social democrat thoughts, Giddens' Social Democracy is kind of critique, making exploration on traditional political problems of the capitalist through reflection. Responsive to a series of problems brought by globalization, it not only has an important influence on the domestic and foreign policies of European countries, but also provides new ideas and inspirations for our country theoretically and realistically.The article is structurally divided into following five parts:â… .The first chapter introduces the theoretical and practical significance of the topic, and reviews the related literature and theoretical achievement in China. Introduce the background of the advance of Giddens' Social Democracy political theory. The author will analyze the reasons and historical background of the rejuvenation of the Social Democratic from the perspective of the relationship between Bernstein revisionism and the modern "Third Way Politics" theory.â…¢. The third chapter will introduce Giddens' criticism on modernity theory and his critical reflections from a global perspective, on four dimensions which comprise modernity, namely political, economic, values, and international relations dimension. â…£. The fourth chapter will introduce Giddens' criticism to the Democratic Socialism and the Neo-liberalism, and his approach to revive the Social Democracy through criticizing the Democratic Socialist.â…¤. The final chapter of the paper will make an attempt to search for a correct view to the Democratic Socialist theory. By analyzing the "third way path" political theory from the theoretical practical significance, the author will conclude its inheritance and development of Marxism, and the light it shed on the construction of a harmonious society in China.
