The U. S. Supreme Court plays a special and important role in the country's political life. This thesis tries to discover how the supreme court's interpretation of the federal constitution influenced the fate of national prohibition through an analysis of the Supreme Court's review of the constitutionality of the 18th amendment to the federal constitution between the years 1917 and 1933, and at the same time, tentatively reveals the significance of the Supreme Court's part in the American policymaking process. This thesis has a foreword and a body consisting of four chapters. The foreword discloses why and how this topic is chosen. The first chapter gives a brief account of related historical background. The second conducts an analysis of concrete cases. As the most important part of the thesis's argumentation, the third chapter is a discussion of some of the fundamental issues involved in the constitutionalism of the United States. On the basis of the previous three parts, the last chapter puts forward the author's conclusion and relevant thoughts on the Supreme Court's role in the American political process.
