| Zeng Guoquan is one of the well-known generals of the Xiang military group. He undergone great changes from excellent intellectuals to brave general, as well as from brave general to local government official. He is a controversial historical personality, he is always criticized by the public for he has repressed the the Taiping Rebellion. And for he starts and acts slowly during the westernization period, he has been excluded from the western affairs party. Furthermore, the academic circle has always placed their focus on Zeng Guofan, Li Hongzhang, Zuo Zongtang and so on, Zeng Guoquan, one of the crucial member of "resurgence famous official" , has not received attention from the academic circle. There have not been through researches on his military, administrative and westernization thinking. The writer holds the opinion that Zeng Guoquan' s thoughts are too important to be neglected. This thesis is based on his military, administrative and westernization thinking, intending to carry out a thorough and detailed exploration and research on the forming process and content of his thoughts and the comments on them, with an attempt to reoriente the historical position of him, to enrich the research content of his thoughts, and to reveal the truth.The first part of the thesis analyzes the forming causes of his thoughts from the viewpoint of his family and the influence from his family, teachers and friends; The second part explores the richness of his thoughts from following four aspects: building the army, administration, strategies and coast defense thought. The third part makes a general comment on his military thinking. The thesis holds the opinion that :Zeng Guoquan acts as one prominent generals of the Xiang military group and government official, his military thought promotes the process of military modernization of China, playing an patriotic and resistant role, as well as bearing a brand of the times and a class, which is not made excessive demands on the ancients.
