The relationship between Iran and Iraq is one of the most important bilateral relations in the Middle East. Its development and moving towards greatly influences the situation in the Middle East and even draws attention all over the world. In this thesis the writer will retrospect the course of the development of their bilateral relations, analyzes its characteristic and draws the conclusion. This paper is consisted of five parts. In the first chapter the writer expounds the religious contact and the territorial issues between Iraq and Iran from a historical perspective. For a long time before the birth of Islam people in these two regions united or confronted again and again or even unified in the same regime.7th century witnessed the rise of Islam and Arab at the same time. From then on both Mesopotamia and Persia came into the Islamic age. That is why the division and uniting of various denominations became the indivisible religious complex of Iraq and Iran, whose disputed border problem got even worse for the invasion of western colonial powers in the 16th century. These were the foreshadowing of Iran-Iraq conflict. The second chapter focuses on the influence of Islamic Revolution in Iran and the root cause of the war between Iran and Iraq from the perspective of national benefits, ethic contradiction, religious affection and the leader's personal enmity.Facing the serious aggression of the west, the Middle East was aware of the necessity of joining up to grow stronger and defend against the aggression. The Arabians, who had founded the prominent Arab Empire, believed their same national tradition, while the Iranians, who had strong religious feelings, insisted on Islam their common bond to draw together. So Pan-Arabism and Pan-Islamism came into being. In 1979 Islamic Revolution broke out and then the cleric class of Khomeini-led Islamic Shiite successfully took over the Iranian regime. The "Exporting revolution" policy, the inconsistency between Pan-Arabism and Pan-Islamism and a large number of actual conflicts between Iran and Iraq finally leads to the outbreak of Iran-Iraq War. In the third part the writer analyzes the cause and effect of Iran-lraq War and Gulf War and their immense influence on Middle East and even Global. After Iran-lraq War both Iran and Iraq had to reconfirm the domestic and foreign policies.Iran, with a new leader, made efforts to repair relations with his neighbors and built up a close and friendly national image, while Iraq flagrantly invaded Kuwait to transfer economic crisis and internal contradictions, which was unanimously condemned and got a devastating striking..From the viewpoint of international relations, the writer in Part four elaborates the impact of the lran-Iraq War on these two countries.Iraq's reconstruction of politics, economy and security after Iran-Iraq War could not be separated from Iran. After the fall of Saddam Hussein,America's military deployment in Iraq and aggressive foreign policy forced Iran to keep vigilant constantly, and Iraq's Shiite became their wrestling point, because Iran's attempt to influence Iraq or even Middle East by supporting Iraq's Shiite, which was the majority of the population, successfully turned into the capital as bargaining with America. The fifth and last part is conclusion. The writer summarizes the traits of the contact between Iran and Iraq in modern times and the influential factors in their contacts. From the perspective of national benefits and geopolitics the writer also expounds the close relationship between the security and stability in Iraq and Iran's security and opportunity,as well as how Iran impact Middle East and enhance the international status through Iraq questions.
