Information transfer has played a crucial role for the peaceful settlement of international crises. Effective communication can provide a clear understanding of the intent and bottom line of each party, and can produce the best decision corresponding to the issues in the shortest possible time, while producing the greatest strategic benefit from such a crisis. However, the channels of communication may be impeded due to ambiguity and faults in judgment, and therefore the incorrect policy-making plan may be chosen; a crisis is full of uncertainty and risk. After World War II in Asia, there have occurred two large scale regional wars near China, namely the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After the outbreak of the Korean War, U.S. forces crossed the military demarcation line of the crisis, and China committed to the Korean War, resulting in a direct confrontation between China and the U.S. During the Vietnam War, as it escalated, China and the U.S. were again at the brink of war, but ultimately the potential crisis was successfully controlled. This paper analyzes the communication of information during the crises in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The transmission and understanding of information have a critical effect on crisis management, and effective transmission of information can play an important role in preventing both expansion of war and post war conflict. A failure in communication can lead to escalation of the crisis, and even into war. Research into the communication between China and America during the two conflicts demonstrates that in the absence of any diplomatic relations between hostile countries, the two sides still, through mutual restraint and effective communication, may avoid or reduce the risk of military conflict.
