Composition teaching in mother tongue teaching in each country occupies an extremely important place. It reflects a person's comprehensive language accomplishment with the aim of culturing the students'competence of expression with characters and such integration capability as imagination, creativity and logic thinking abilities. However, the comments of being"lacking, tardy, poor, redundant"has unanimously been considered as the logo of composition teaching, Student writing "false, big and empty" the phenomenon of serious, Composition Teaching reform is urgently needed. The propulsion of Basic Education Curriculum Reform in China shed some light on the teaching of writing to shake off the dilemma and there has been a thriving scene in composition teaching. Yet due to the ingrained exam-oriented education thought, the pace of reform is rather slow. One of the resolve is to lend stones from other hills to polish jade. That is to learn from the successful experience of composition teaching in foreign countries to promote the reform of China's composition teaching much faster and better by comparing the composition teaching at home and abroad.Language in Comparative Education starts late in China, but there is no lack of comparative works or thesis to introduce comparisons of teaching on Sino-US or Sino-Japanese writing. But what needs to be noteworthy is that most of these studying concern the brief introduction or comparison of the experience of American or Japanese composition teaching, insufficient in theoretical level to discuss respective advantages and disadvantages as well as the significance to Chinese composition teaching. The present paper aims to compare the Sino-US and Sino-Japanese composition teaching in the following four aspects: teaching objectives, teaching content, teaching process and methods, essay exams. Then the paper will analyze the respective advantages and disadvantages theoretically to discover the quintessence in US or Japanese composition teaching to provide some reference for Chinese composition teaching reform.
