Reading is an important channel for people to obtain information. Because of little interest, bad reading habits and unsuitable assessment system, English teachers in high schools often fail to achieve a satisfactory effect in developing students'reading competence though they spend a lot of time and efforts. Portfolio, as an important evaluative tool in formative assessment, helps teachers find out what students are learning inside and outside the classroom and how well they are learning. It emphasizes the learning process as well as the final result. To prove the effectiveness of the formative assessment in reading teaching the author applied the portfolio to the evaluation process and compared the effect with that of the traditional summative assessment. A one-term experiment is conducted in a middle school and the result suggests that the formative assessment is more effective to aid students to form a positive attitude in reading than traditional summative assessment and thus enhance students'English reading ability and comprehensive language proficiency.
