Teaching methods include verbal behaviors and non-verbal behaviors. Questioning behavior is one of the common verbal behaviors in English classes, which has greatly promoted the acquisition of languages. And this behavior is widely used in classes. So researching on the situation of questioning in English class to find the ways to improve the quality of English teaching is very meaningful and important.In this research, a questionnaire has been conducted in one junior middle school in Baoshan of Shanghai. A total of 220 students have been investigated, who are from four grades of the school. Meanwhile, four teachers from one junior middle school in writer's hometown have been interviewed. The writer will study questioning from many aspects, such as the fraquency of raising questions, the ways of quesioning, the types of questions, how to ask students to answer questions.From the survey, we can find that most students think that questioning benefits their study. However, a large amount of students are not willing to answer teacher's questions or to raise questions to their teacher. And the reason for this is that they are shy. They hope that the questions should be more interesting and a competion can be use as one way of answering questions. From a different aspect, the teacher need to deal with a series of problems in the class to make the teaching effective.After analysing the questionnaire and interview, we know the situation of questioning in junior middle school well. We find not only some advantages but also some disadvantages. These good points need to affirm and spread, and the bad points need to be revised and improved. And at the end of the paper, the writer offers some solutions to the problems to reach the teaching objectives.There are five parts in the paper. Chapter One is an introduction to the research background, research aims, the significance, the contents, methods of the study and some related concepts used in the paper. Chapter Two offers the theoretical basis of the study and relevant study. Chapter Three is about the investigation of the present situation of questioning in junior middle school English class. Chapter Four mainly concerns the analysis on questioning and the exsiting problems. Chapter Five draws the inclusion, find the solutions to the problems and points out the shortcomings.
