The Teaching of writing to the senior high school students is undergoing some fundamental changes as a result of teachers' growing awareness of various kinds of research and methodologies. Writing classes are no longer centered on the teacher. The way that the teacher asks the students to write a topic and then directs the students to follow the traditional mode is less used in the writing class.This paper emphasized the value of the process approach by inquiring into its history, its advantages and disadvantages and putting it into practice. The process approach should be applied to the teaching of writing to the students flexibly and practically.The focus of this paper is to apply the process approach to the teaching of writing in senior high school in order to promote his students'ability to write. The research involves 5 English teachers and 56 students in senior two from Chang' an No.7 high school and it takes about 18 weeks to finish. A variety of approaches are adopted in this research, consisting of analysis of questionnaires, pre-test and post-test papers, classroom observation and interviews. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed to complement with each other as well as to enhance the validity and reliability of this research.The research aims at investigating the practice of process approach in the senior high school and the students' perception of it. The difficulties and problems they met in the process are also mentioned. Through the research, the writer tries to collect more information to develop the process approach. In particular, the following questions were discussed:Could process approach improve the students' writing competence? 2. Could process approach attract the students' attention and interest? 3. Could process approach motivate the students to take active part in writing class? 4. Could process approach improve teachers' teaching methods?The results are as follows; it has been shown in this study that by using the process approach, the students are able to set up ideas logically and coherently. And it is proved that the approach is useful in helping and encouraging students to achieve writing goals effectively. A second important finding is that the teacher should always keep in mind that students have different levels of writing skill and competence. So in the teaching of writing, different methods should be adopted to meet different needs. The third finding is that feedback is of great importance to the teacher. As this study showed, the students were able to allow their classmates to make comment on their writings and regard their peers as teachers.
