Learning English is becoming increasingly important nowadays in China. It is necessary for a high school student to master the most widely used language. Whether it is for the exam or for the students own development, the ability to be proficient in English is necessary for high school students. To train students’ fundamental ability of listening, reading, speaking, and writing is the aim of English Teaching in senior middle school. And one of the requirement of the development of students’ ability of using English consists in improving writing skills. However, writing has always been a great challenge for senior high school students. There exists the phenomenon in English writing teaching that students think there is nothing to write about, and to learn to write is tough for them.To improve the situation, the writer makes an attempt to apply a widely acceptable teaching method in western countries—Process Approach to senior high school teaching practice. This thesis is intended to guide high school students in English writing with process writing approach, and tests the effect of it in high school English teaching with the experiment results. The paper aims to find out whether process writing approach can improve students writing skills, and enable them to make progress in writing tests. Besides, process writing approach can arouse students’ interest and help students build positive attitudes towards English writing? In the research, a questionnaire before and after the experiment and pre-interview as well as post-interview are conducted; three writing tests(one pre-test and two post-tests) are used to examine students’ writing proficiency. After thoroughgoing analysis of the results of three tests and careful comparison of the Experimental Class and Control Class, it can be concluded that using the process approach has made significant achievement in English writing for students in the Experimental Class. The process approach has been proved effective and feasible in improving students writing skills, and it enables them to make progress in writing test. Besides, the process writing approach arouses students’ interest and develops students’ positive attitudes towards English writing.To sum up, the process approach provides a good method for teaching English writing. It allows students to realize the importance of the process of writing and develop students’ writing ability. Through various writing communication activities, students can form their own opinions, broaden their horizon and express themselves in English freely. More importantly, they are able to achieve the ultimate goal of learning English in real--life communication.
