Vocabulary is not only an important foundation to learn English well but also a significant precondition for developing the abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing. As Hamer, a famous linguists, once said, "If language structures make up the skeleton of language, then it is vocabulary that provides the vital organs and the flesh." In China, to have classes is the main road for students here to learn vocabulary. Also teaching material is the chief book for them to learn vocabulary. Thus, the word characteristics in English book could easily have a direct impact on vocabulary teaching. In addition, the current textbooks are not so perfect, so are the vocabulary. However, teachers in school have to totally accept them without any opportunity to choose. In that case, it is necessary for them to know the textbook objectively and before teaching, they also had better know the characteristics of vocabulary very well.English is one of basic courses in primary school whose elementary task is to make the students be interested in learning English and to help the them develop the preliminary abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Yet, vocabulary teaching in primary school today has a lot of difficulties among conception of teaching, content of courses and methods of teaching.The object of this study is the vocabulary in the Fun with English (Yilin Edition). Meanwhile, the research method here is a measuring method of quantitative analysis, which is used for providing some word teaching advices by analyzing the overall characteristics included the total vocabulary, the word distribution and the sequence of word presentation in the Fun with English (Yilin Edition).We can find that, the total vocabulary in the Fun with English (Yilin Edition) is greater than that the standard of New Curriculum demanded. Most of the words in the Fun with English (Yilin Edition) are high frequency but they are in uneven distribution. There are something wrong with the selection and presentation sequence of the words in teaching material. As a result, if teachers want to improve the learning effect, they had better take word family seriously, pay attention to the guidance of learning high frequency word, make their students know function word well and set up an individual word list.
