Qin and Han dynasties, as the period of establishment of China's feudal centralization of authority, take a very important place in the history of China. So does the period in the educational history of China. This historical period saw the set-up and development of China's feudal educational and cultural policy, educational system and educational thoughts, laid a sound basis for the feudalist education of China and has been influential. Because of political changes, personal qualities of the then political rulers and the limited material prosperity, school education at that time was limited in scale and efficiency. Therefore, social education was highly valued by the then rulers. In fact, social education played a vital role in cultivating people and social customs, stabilizing the social order, and promoting productive forces and social development.This present thesis studies the social education in Qin and Han dynasties, with the purposes of discriminating the concept of social education, outlining the then social education, finding out the law of development of social education in China. Besides, this thesis is intended to extend the research field of the educational history of China and to provide some reference for the current education in China.The whole thesis consists of four parts: Part one provides various definitions of the social education, at home and abroad; based on this, puts forward a new definition of the social education. Part two discusses the social education in Qin and Han dynasties, in terms of farming education, ethical education, social customs education, officials education and ecological education. In the third part, some main features of the social education in Qin and Han dynasties are given. The final part of this thesis points out the significance and values of the research of the social education in Qin and Han dynasties for the current education.
