Vocational education is an indispensable component of modern education, and the mainstay in state industrialisation, production socialisation, and modernisation. Since the reform and opening up to the outside world, vocational education has seen rapid development in our country, and the country has so far trained a large number of high-quality practical personnel, which has greatly improved the quality of skilled labourers and workers, and accelerated the nation's economic and social development. In recent years, however, it has been facing challenges, such as the reduction of high school students to enter colleges and universities, the downtrend of the students' overall quality, and the employment difficulty on the part of vocational college graduates. The paper, by means of a retrospective summary of the development of the country's vocational education, first analyses the major challenges and their causes that vocational education is facing now, and then elaborates on the necessity of developing vocational education in our country, and finally brings forward some strategies to develop vocational education.1. We have to change the mode of development with regard to sustainable development. We should build up the idea of scientific development, that is, to deal with the interrelationships of various factors in the development of vocational education, to set up regional vocational education system, to form a new pattern of modern vocational education through regional cooperation, and rural and urban combination, and to improve the performance with a larger scale and a better pattern. 2. We should take up more powerful measures to implement the relevant laws and regulations of the state concerning vocational education, and set up and perfect the system of employment within a reasonable period of time. 3. We should have more investment in vocational education. 4. We should find ways to protect the resources of vocational education. 5. We should readjust the enrolment policies on the part of vocational colleges, so that more secondary vocational school leavers can have the chances to enter vocational colleges. 6. We should try our best to improve the quality of vocational education.
