China is a country with multiple nationalities. There is diversity, pluralism and complexity among different nationalities. And the research of minority nationalities, Which consummates and enriches Psychology theories, becomes an important aspect of Psychology. It is also an important way by which we can establish good identification which is fit for the plural-cultured society. Salar has the largest population in the nationalities whose population is under 100,000 in China. There are few researches about it in China. Mathematical problem solving, especially mathematical applied problem solving, is an important aspect of mathematical teaching, and is also one of the focuses of Psychology and Pedagogy. But there is no complete and deep research of minority nationality students' mathematical problem solving, nor the research of factors that influence it. So we made a systematic study about Han and Sala students' processes characteristics and influence factors of mathematical applied problem solving, with different methods such as protocol analysis, questionnaire, surveying and so on. Here are our conclusions.1. Both Han and Sala students follow the 5 stages of mathematical problem solving. It indicates the cross-cultural characteristic of problem solving. It also shows that students of Han nationality don't better than that of Sala at all stages. In other words, Sala has their own advantages in some aspects.2. The common mistakes of junior middle school students' problem solving are mainly about the relation perception, the schema and the calculation. Sala students have more mistakes in schema while han students have more in calculation.3. As to the average level of problem solving, there is no obvious difference between Han and Sala under the same education condition; but a great deal of differences among different schools. It indicates that education influences problem solving more than national factors does.4. The main factors, which influence the problem solving of Han and Sala students, are intellectual influence ability, mathematical knowledge and mathematical applied problem cognitive structure. The three can directly forecast the result of Mathematical problem solving. But there is also difference between nationalities.According to those conclusions, we come up with 7 pieces of advice of improving the mathematical problem solving ability of junior middle school students in minority nationality regions, such as paying attention to the education of minority nationality, laying emphasis on the teaching of problem solving and so on.
