This paper is to compare the general index of the successful techniques and the reason of success for elite athletes at the Olympic Games from 1990-2000 by watching VCRs with the aim of summarizing the application of successful techniques as well as the trend of Judo. With the approaching of the 2008 Olympic Games, the breakthrough of zero gold medal in men's judo is imminent. Besides more trainings and games with the high-level foreign athletes, to learn the opponent's skills and techniques is one of the most effective methods. This paper will analyze the skills and techniques of the European athletes and Japanese athletes and make the following conclusions:1) Tewaza, ashiwaza and sutemiwaza were used most often at the 3 Olympic Games. In newaza, jujigatame was a successful way to win. In 1992 Olympic Games, it appeared 13 times, accounting for 7% of all the skills. In 1996, it appeared 21times, accounting for 12% and in 2000 it appeared 7 times, 5%. As one of the skills in Japanese judo, there are few examples that Japanese judo players succeeded with jujigatame. Traditional European Sonbo is similar to it when applied to judo. The precise completion of the movement and the unique European physical quality make it western judo. In tewaza, Japanese judo players use more ashiwaza and tewaza while European players use more sutemiwaza and most suguiwaza in the 2000 Olympic Games. Besides, the percentage of European success with newaza is more than that of Japanese players.2) As to hand grips, no difference was detected from the 3 Olympic Games. But Japanese and European players of different physique and different types affect the competition results.European players are good at gripping with one hand and have more percentage of success while Japanese players are good at gripping with both hands. It can be concluded that the hand grips are adopted to deal with each other.3) By analyzing vertically, we can find the developing trend. The revision of the judging rule forces the players to attack aggressively. Players prefer one bon success with throwing skill and seldom use newaza. Constant calls of stop by judges increases the appreciative side of Judo. From the 3 Olympic games, the increasing percentage of the throwing skill and the shortening of judo competitions make the matches more exciting.
