This research uses questionnaires as the main research tool, complemented with indepth individual interviews as a medium of qualitative research. The aim of research is to analyse the consciousness on sexual roles among Macau secondary students in same-sex as well as co-educational institutes. The subjects were senior secondary students from boys" schools, girls" schools and co-educational schools. There were 248 students from girls' schools. 252 from boys' schools. 265 female and 181 male subjects from co-educational schools. A total of 946 questionnaires were given out. I thereby hope to find out if studying senior secondary level in different educational systems would exert different influences to the students' altitude and interactions with the opposite sex later in life. This is the reason why much attention was given when choosing the sex ratio of the sample in order to achieve a 1 to I ratio. Results from the research shows that in the aspect of personal traits, being in a co-ed class does not influence boys' expectation of trait evaluations from mail and female. On the other hand, being in a co-ed class will influence girls" expectation of trait evaluations from male and female. In the aspect of sexual role, research shows that sexual role attitude in co-ed students is very obvious, whereas students in same-sex schools demonstrate relatively blur sexual distinction. In the aspect of interaction, a reference group exists in the environment of the co-ed students whose interactive activities are not limited. In same-sex schools, boys are using most of their after-school time to pursuit opportunities to befriend with girls. Girl students' behaviours are, on the other hand, more introverted. In achievement motivation, the more open teaching pattern in boys' schools enhances a stronger competitiveness among the students. Under the spell of social expectations, boys in co-ed schools obtain lower scores than their counterparts in same-sex schools. As fro girls, whether they are in same-sex or co-ed schools, traditional social valueshave a deep root in them.
