As a significant kind of learning resource and also an important part of teaching materials, multimedia courseware in universities and schools are, at present, developed with a model of "handcraft workshop" at large. Ways of developing such courseware are mainly of individualized nature, among which some simply lay particular stress on the application of tool software while others are short of normative management documents or a wholly systematic view. It is now the actualities that multimedia courseware is of larger quantity but lower quality.In the background of Computer-Based Education and Software Engineering, the thesis, with a probe into the status quo of multimedia courseware, analyzes the existing problems and introduces the thoughts and methods of software engineering into the development of multimedia courseware. It puts forward the concept of Life Circle of Multimedia Courseware, constructs and applies the development model of multimedia courseware, waterfall model and increment model, to two development cases of multimedia courseware. The practice proves that the development based on the thoughts and ways of software engineering and the application of proper models can ensure the quality and efficiency of the courseware development. The practical significance of it lies in the prospect that the actualities of developers attaching more importance to the results than to the process, to the realization than to the design, and to technology application than to systematic ways will be improved.The development models have been tested by the practice of development. Success have been achieved in applying, for example, the increment model to setting up the whole network courseware of educational technology by the Department of Educational Information Technology of East China Normal University. The models constructed in this thesis turn out to be effective and valuable in terms of the practice of development.
