Using statistic to trim data is one of important statistical methods. The present study makes out four aspects enclosing high school students' comprehension on statistic in common use as follows:Firstly, the comprehension on statistic has been partitioned into five levels by the author of the thesis on the basis of that Mr. Peter Holmes in England put forward five qualities on statistics in 1980; that Mr. Jerry Moreno in America brought forward what citizens should have on statistical qualities at the meeting of ICOTS5 coming off in 1998; that Miss Jane Watson in Australia advanced that statistical quality includes three levels at the meeting of ICOTS6 coming off in South Africa in 2002; as well as five thinking levels of geometry given by Holland's educator Hiller and the behavioral, cognitive depth of students' mastery on statistic.1) level zero: incomprehension on statistic, including incomprehension on statistical names, computation formula, false comprehension, producing entirely irrelevant or illogical answers;2) level one: comprehension on statistical names in common use and general calculation, being able to recognize statistic in actual case;3) level two: comprehension on the meaning of statistic only from a single angle, not from a multi-angle;4) level three: being able to synthetically understand the statistic in common use and to comprehend the meaning of statistic from a multi-angle;5) level four: in actual situations, being able to choose proper statistic in common use reasonably, make proper interpretation and analysis and judgment and question the inappropriate statistic.Secondly, through the testing of 340 students, who come from 5 high schools of Guiyang, on their comprehension level on statistic in common use, and interviewing 40, it is concluded that the students' comprehension level on statistic in common use is low. Also, the causes are analyzed. Simultaneously, the same test and interview have been applied to 10 teachers from the same 5 high schools and another 72 teachers from different counties of Guizhou, who come to Guiyang for further learning in their mathematics major of bachelor degree. The result is that the teachers' answers make no difference to the students', except to questions of statistical calculation concerned. After relevant analyses, conclusion can be drawn that students' comprehension level on statistic is directly correlated to teachers' on medium.Thirdly, teaching experiment has been carried on two parallel classes of a high school in Guiyang, in hope of finding the way from low to high level of students' comprehension on statistic. Result has been seen that, on the whole, the experiment class students' comprehension level is higher than the comparison class students'; while, from the single angle of calculation, there seems no change at all.Finally, a probing into the transformation strategies from low to highcomprehension levels has been made, and the suggestions on teacher's teachinghave also been given.
