Teaching Chinese Reading Comprehension is an area where most time should be spent and greatest efforts be made. Yet for a long period of time, not much achievement has been accomplished in finding effective methods. This article analyses the causes of the little content -slow development-poor efficiency - energy wasting phenomenon in the current teaching of Chinese reading comprehension in terms of its orientation and styles. It also puts in order some basic elements concerning the essence of reading, interpretation of the meanings of the reading materials and the relations between reading & writing.. The author holds the view that the traditional teaching methods lay too much emphasis on the knowledge acquired from reading & practical uses of reading itself, separating reading form speaking & writing and neglecting its " representation" and " development " functions. The criterion of such "reading-oriented & practical absorbing" teaching style seriously restricted the healthy development of the teaching of reading comprehension. Therefore it is necessary to establish a new teaching criterion of " writing-oriented " representation & development which fits in better with the basic principles of teaching of reading.. This article visualizes this teaching criterion from the aspects of teaching materials ,implementation principles Reaching methods and means of evaluation in the hope of providing some beneficial revelation to the teaching of reading comprehension henceforth.
