The ultimate aim education should achieve is people's all-round , harmonious development. Today , however , education in our school does not provide for every student opportunity and criticism which can be taken to bring possible development into full play . The main reasons for this outcome are summarized as follows : First , our education overemphasizes not only unity , compulsion and standardization . but also the socialization of personnel training ,whereas ignores the training of personality ; Second ,our education only confront students for the most part instead of approaching every student's reality consciously and fairly .Based on the analysis of main theories or views in history Chinese and foreign scholars hold on students development, and from the viewpoint of limits Unity-Education caused on student's development , this dissertation not only puts forward and criticizes various kinds of malpractices , which exist on past education and today's and hinder the development of students , but also raises the Theory of Selective Learning , which is directed against those malpractices , to endeavor to complement the insufficiencies caused by unity-education through selective activity in learning and to achieve the goal that every student may obtain possible development beyond his limits .The so-called Selective Learning means that. under the direction and assistance of teachers and on the basis of student's interest , hobby and intellectual superiority , students may choose learning patterns , to meet the needs of their own development , such as learning content , learning method , learning partner , school assignment, testing content and so on . The characteristics of selective leaning may be summarized as follows: it is a kind of openedlearning other than closed learning ; a kind of interesting learning on one's own other than compulsory learning ; a kind of learning focused on student's development; a kind of learning advocated individualization .Selective learning does not reject the unified needs put forward by the development of society . In order to achieve the ultimate aim that every student may bring possible development into full play through selective learning , the relation between selective learning and unity-learning must be treated objectively . Selective learning must be performed on the basis of unified requirements . We can not completely deny the unity education and rebuild the system of selective education . but organically unite them to influence and supplement each other . Unity-education is the cornerstone of selective learning while the latter is the supplementation and deepening of the former . Unity-learning can not substitute for selective learning and so is the other way round .This dissertation hold that selective learning can promote every student's possible development to full play . First , it lays stress on student's interest . hobby and personality of acting on his own and is beneficial to full development of non-intellectual factors such as emotion , attitude etc . Second . selective learning can meet the needs of student's study to its full play and cultivate correct learning motive and world outlook for students . Third . selective learning attaches importance to the process of a through inquiry into learning activity and is beneficial to cultivate the full development of the ability to create or invent and the ability to solve problems .
