The aim of this paper is to explore the role of formulaic language in achieving idiomaticity and fluency in speech communication through the study of the lexicalized sentence stems or formulaic language theory, various varieties of formulaic English language, and lexical phrases approach.Formulaic language is now widely acknowledged in language teaching and learning. Teachers of English want their students to be communicative and to become communicatively competent. The fact that the students speak without an accent, make no grammatical errors, and produce correct sentences cannot ensure the perfect acquisition of English. There are two issues taken into consideration: firstly, what standards should be approached in language learning and acquisition, and secondly, why native speakers can communicate in a natural idiomatic way and how we learners of a second language (SL) or foreign language (FL) can communicate like a native speaker. The main purpose of the study is to ensure the feasibility to achieve idiomaticity and fluency with the appropriate use of formulas. It is universally believed that the fluent and idiomatic control of a language rests to a considerable extent on knowledge of a body of sentence stems which are institutionalized or lexicalized and the theory of lexicalized sentence stems provides a partial basis for this nativelike selection and nativelike fluency. Learners have to access to numerous lexicalized sentence stems to refer to standard phenomena in a speech community. The study of the categorization of formulaic language and various varieties of formulaic English provides a further observation for language learners to gain knowledge and understanding of this field. Two effective frameworks of teaching the use of formulaic language, and some practical methods of teaching and learning idioms are presented to show the feasibility of teaching and learning of formulaic language in speech. This paper consists of six chapters. Chapter one is the introduction in which I give a general idea of the present situation within the field of formulaic study in speech communication. Chapter two stresses the definition of communication and its categories. A spherical model of the components of the communication process is presented. Chapter three sees the role of formulaic language in nativelike selection and nativelike fluency in the process of speech communication. Formulaic language is illustrated from various aspects, definition, identification, categorization and its role in nativelike selection and nativelike fluency. Chapter four covers a detailed analysis of formulas in different formulaic varieties of English, namely, sports, auction, and news. Chapter five is about the practical approaches to teachingand learning the formulaic language based on the problems that have been observed in a survey. Chapter six is the conclusion in which I give an overview of the study and emphasize again the significance of formulaic language in speech.Formulaic language indicates ways of effective speech communication. It will help enhance learners' idiomaticity and fluency in communicating with their counterparts and even with native speakers.
