Cohesion and coherence has always been an important aspect of teachingEnglish writing. This thesis is intended to examine the cohesion and coherence inpresent Chinese Senior High School students'English compositions.The thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter One illustrates the importance of developing writing skills and presentsthe problems in Chinese students'English compositions.Chapter Two introduces the four systems of textual metafunction: cohesion,thematic structure, information structure, parallelism and much emphasis is laid oncohesive ties.Chapter Three concerns the specific methods in the study and data analysis. Thisstudy includes questionnaires distributed to both students and teachers and analysis ofthe two questionnaires.Chapter Four includes (1) the applicational analysis of the theory of cohesion. (2)the analysis of Senior High School students'English compositions by decodingscheme and from the aspects of conjunction and lexical cohesion (3 ) the causes ofstudents'problems in writing.Chapter Five offers implications for teaching and learning.
