It is not only the requirement of lifelong education to cultivate senior high school students'learning autonomy, but also the requirement of sustainable development. They new century's education should be the education for the development, for the students'development and for the society's development. What's the most important for a teacher is not how much knowledge he can teach the students, but how he can cultivate students in such a way that they will have the learning strategy and ability of acquiring knowledge. This paper discusses how to cultivate senior high students'learning autonomy in English teaching through the roles of teachers and students, the models of learning autonomy that can be applied to in English teaching and the strategies needed to grasp a foreign language. It reveals that a teacher will achieve ideal teaching results only if he follows the law of students'physical and psychological development, takes measures flexibly according to teaching and tries his best to improve the ability of students'learning autonomy.
