In the past two decades, numerous studies have been done in autonomy, self-regulation and self-instruction. It is accepted that teaching should aim at producing autonomous learners who can take charge of their learning outside class. Former research done in metacognition all seem to prove training in metacognitive strategies is the facilitator of learners'autonomy. In China, where teachers have been dominating the classroom, and where countless passive, dependent learners are produced, there is great value for instruction in strategies, to improve the self-regulation of adolescents. This paper presents a training program conducted with Junior One students in two ordinary schools in Baotou. The study lasted for two semesters with the objectives to enrich the students'metacognitive knowledge, to improve the learners'level of self-regulation and to test if there is any correlation between metacognition and the learners'school records or language proficiency. The analysis shows the effect of the training and also reveals some limitation of the program and leaves much to be improved. The dissertation after the experiment consists of six sections. Section One: Introduction of the background. Putting forward the main purpose of the research by analyzing the background. Section Two: Meta-cognitive strategies. Putting forward the research theory on the basis of clarifying the relating terminology and exploring the relating studies. Section Three: The experimental research of meta-cognitive strategies. Designing the procedures of the research by analyzing. Section Four: Implementation of the research. Section Five: Research findings. Section Six: Reflection and conclusion.
