What ethos should be maintained and embodied by university teachers as public intellectuals, whose disappearance scholars call for in nowadays society? In the light of the traditional researches, the present study is designed to elaborate on the ethos of university teachers from a public intellectual dimension, with an aim to expounding the composition and characteristics of such ethos from an original angle. Under the guidance of this research objective, we first address the question whether a public intellectual dimension can be adopted for the present study, which is followed by an analysis of the common features and special features of university teachers and public intellectuals respectively. From such a dimension, we further explore the role of university teachers and then probe into the ethos which university teachers should maintain and embody. Invoking a review of the current situation of the ethos of university teachers, we examine the deficit phenomenon and its root causes. The last part is dedicated to a comparison between what ought to be and what it is and a tentative analysis of how to cultivate and construct the ethos of university teachers as public intellectuals. It also brings the present study to a close by a series of solutions and suggestions.A speculative method is adopted for the present study in a view to approaching the following four questions. Firstly, is it possible to or why investigate the ethos of university teachers from a public intellectual dimension? Secondly, What ethos should university teachers embody? Thirdly, what are lacking in such ethos? Fourthly, how can cultivate and construct such ethos?...
