The traditional teacher's role can't meet the requirements of the development of teaching in the era of Curriculum Reform. The more serious contrasts between the professional and the public in the teacher's role show that being the "intellectual" is needed urgently to resolve the current crisis in education. The role of being the "intellectual" is a new teacher's role advocated in the Curriculum. That means the Curriculum contains the demands of the teacher's role being the "intellectual", which can be proved from the social value, the objectives and the teacher's professional development in the Curriculum. It can be found that the "intellectual" role is the composition of role groups based on the "reflective practitioner", on which the teacher's role "conical model diagram" is constructed from the perspectives of the professional and the public. The public parts that contain the humane care, enlightenment and criticism should be emphasized especially among the roles. It is necessary to describe the teacher's image being the "intellectual" around factors of teaching materials, students and environments in teaching. To explore the direction and the basic strategy of transforming to the "intellectual" is relied on the foundation of the theory of the Public Sphere, Confucian cultural tradition and the current situations of China. To construct the tolerant teaching environment can be seen as the external condition, in which the curriculum, the school, the teacher and the students play the important role with each other to the range of social culture and everyone's freedom of expressing is allowed and encouraged so as to reach dynamic equilibrium because of the resolved arguments in different opinions by rational communications. In addition to the support of the external condition, different types of teachers willing to be the "intellectual" also should be discovered as the inner powers. It is the key for the normal students to change the training paradigm so that they are able to form the concept of the "intellectual" by enhancing their public awareness. And for the general population of teachers, the conversion direction can be focused on the enhancement of "humane care", or the thoughts of tolerant and altruistic education. While for the key teachers, the development priorities should be emphasized on their rational teaching and critical way of life because of their unique advantages in the conversion.
