Reading is usually recognized as the most important skill of the Chinese students. More and more importance is attached to the training of reading comprehension. But, under the influence of the traditional pedagogy, quite a few senior high school teachers lay focus on the learning of the knowledge of vocabulary and grammar. The integral teaching method is proposed to adapt to the requirement of national,, quality education.To start with, the thesis mainly discusses the reading comprehension, from the definition of reading and reading comprehension to three different reading models. Then the thesis lays its foundation on integral teaching. When I use the new English textbooks, I adopt the method of " whole-part-whole" and deem the discourse analysis to be the central teaching task. In the last part of the thesis, an experiment is done between two classes using two different teaching methods, one is traditional, the other is new. The integral teaching is proved to be far better. It develops the students' intelligence and the ability to think logically, and greatly arouses the students' interest in learning English.In a word ,we must pay more attention to the reading theory, take an active part in the improvement of teaching, form a suitable teaching style and try to improve the students' level of reading comprehension.
