The main puipose of English teaching in senior high school is to enhance students' quality in English, and an important part of quality-oriented education is the development of the students' ability to learn autonomously. Hence, it's extremely urgent to develop students with such ability in English teaching.As a complementary approach to the in-class English teaching, extra-curricular reading plays more and more an important role in it. And autonomous reading of extra-curriculum has been paid wider and wider attention. Autonomous reading of extra-curriculum, to a certain degree, can overcome learners' anxiety, heighten their self-confidence and reduce the negative effects of affective factors in English learning. The theoretical basis of autonomous reading is humanism, metacognitive and constructivism view, all of which emphasize the learner-centered training of skills and abilities in English teaching. In view of the drawbacks in English reading, such as students' lack of reading, low reading quality, low reading level etc., this paper aims at exploring an effective way in teaching reading in order to develop the students to be autonomous learners, and pave the way for their life-long learning. All of these are in accordance with the requirements of the national Standard of English curriculum.In the present research, the researcher endeavors to introduce a learning approach in teaching reading skills through extra-curricular reading work. This study attempts to find out a new approach, that is, using the Method of Reading Record to develop students' reading ability and learner autonomy in senior high school.
