The mere understanding of what the theme is and what the rheme is can make us learn the detail information in a sentence. And the pattern of thematic progression can help us learn the structure and the main idea of a discourse, learn the intension and attitudes of the writer, and get further information through judgments. The essay gives a systematic introduction to the theory mentioned above, analyses the requirements and features in English reading of senior students, and points out that the theory of theme and rheme works a lot in senior English reading. The theory of theme and rheme was first come up with by K · Boost. V · Mathessius, Halliday and Thompson perfected and developed the theory. Theme is the starting point of information, which is usually placed in the head of a sentence while rheme contains all the rest parts of a sentence, which describes and explains the theme. Senior English reading requires that students should understand the main idea of a discourse, learn the details within the text, analyze the basic structure of the article, make simple logical judgments, And get to know the writer's intension and attitudes. And the theory of theme and rheme can help the students to reach these goals. The essay also comes up with varieties of suitable modes of theme and rheme for discourses of different styles. In order to improve the correction of the theory, an experiment was done. Two tests were used as measuring tools and two simple surveys were also made to test the reliability of the measurement. The experiment and measurement in the essay tells that the theory of theme and rheme can help to improve senior students' English reading skills. And the experiment also led to some other conclusions.
