Many students have difficulty in understanding the outline of the texts,analyzing connections between sentences in a paragraph,and reading the text fast.The application of thematic progression to teaching of senior high school English reading aims to help students deal with the above problems.The thesis deals with knowledge about Theme,Rheme,thematic progression,patterns of thematic progression.The division of Theme and Rheme is based on M.A.K.Halliday's research.And four basic patterns of thematic progression are applied to English reading in the thesis,which are constant Theme pattern,constant Rheme pattern,linear Theme pattern and cross Theme pattern.When applying the thematic progression to English reading classes,Themes and Rhemes in the text should be divided first and then according to the order of the themes in the text,the writing purpose of the text can be easily found and through the thematic progression,it is easy for students to find out the most important information.The research began in September,2016 and ended in February,2017.When doing the research,instruments,such as questionnaires,interviews,and tests are used to help collect useful information.Subjects are two classes of students,which are made up of95 students.During the research process,three questions are expected to be resolved as follows.(1)How can thematic progression be applied to teaching of senior high school English reading?(2)To what degree does the application of thematic progression improve students' reading ability?(3)What problems may occur in the application of thematic progression?By applying the thematic progression to teaching of senior high school English reading,students find it easier to understand the outline of the text.The connections between sentences in a paragraph are clearer than before,which helps students avoid wasting unnecessary time in reciting the text by rote.In addition,students can read the text faster than before.Meanwhile,students' logical thinking ability,critical thinking ability,and information acquiring ability are also improved.Some students' confidence in English reading is increased simultaneously.There are still some problems remaining to be settled in the research.And how thematic progression can be applied more effectively deserves further research.
