The text-based teaching model refers to instructing students to draw the graph of the text structure and to absorb the whole meaning of the text regarding the whole text as a basic unit by means of macro structure analysis (including generic structure, plot, main idea, text structure and so on) and micro structure analysis(including vocabulary , grammar and so forth).English teaching stresses the cultivating of students' reading comprehension in senior middle school. But how to cultivate is the problem that teachers are paying much attention to and thinking about all the time. In Zhongxiang Experimental Middle School, many factors, such as poor students, low qualify of teachers and equipments, backward ideas of teaching and so forth, lead to students' English achievement falling behind other school students'. However, of all the abilities, poor reading ability is the key problem that the teachers and the students can't deal with. In order to change the phenomenon to some degree, The writer tries to apply the text-based teaching model to English reading course, making the teaching of reading course go out of the traditional model which focuses on the analysis of words, expressions and sentences and only gets to the level of literal comprehension. The method contributes to the improvement of students' reading comprehension.The thesis uses the methods of theory analysis and empirical research. It describes the text type and text structures of narrative texts, argumentative texts and expositive texts which can often be seen in English textbooks of senior middle school, and the writer does one -year teaching experiment in Zhongxiang Experimental Middle School: Class 2 of Grade 3 is experimented class, which is taught with the text-based teaching model, while Class 6 of Grade 3 is contrasted class, which is taught in the traditional way. The thesis also contrasts and analyzes the results of experiment. The results are that the average achievement of Class 2 is apparently better than that of Class 6, which shows the text-based teaching model more contributes to improving students' reading comprehension than traditional teaching model.Through the analysis above, the thesis concludes that the text-based teaching model can help students to analyze and master the whole layout, general idea of each paragraphand main idea of the whole text. It can also contribute to improving students 'reading comprehension to some degree, especially referential and creative comprehension. So it is necessary to employ the model in English classroom of this type of senior middle schools. The model is well worth studying and using by senior middle school teachers.
