In the English testing system of entrance examination to the universities, reading comprehension holds an important position and objective test questions take an increasingly big proportion in recent years, which make English learners consider that there is no need to spend much time on vocabulary learning. Actually the amount of vocabulary and the capacity of using these vocabularies have a direct impact on a learner's richness and accuracy in speaking and writing. Facts have borne out that fail to grasp the effective approaches to vocabulary learning, vocabulary memory, vocabulary usage and productive vocabulary at the early stage of learning a foreign language can lead to a loss of interest even quitting of the language study. In this sense, some effective vocabulary memory theories and approaches, if can be instructed to language learners, will undoubtedly improve their interests and help them to be automatic in language learning. Because of the learners' principal part in instructional activities, teachers should play the guiding role in language instruction, particularly in vocabulary learning during an efficient teaching process. The language teachers should mobilize the learners' enthusiasm and initiative, and make them play the language learners' principal roles.In resent years, vocabulary instruction and learning has been thought much highly of by language researchers, language teachers and language learners. But which method or approach is more effective in vocabulary instruction and learning, different language researchers speak in favor of different conceptions. Accordingly, this thesis tries to expound upon the influence of Lexical-phrase Approach on English vocabulary instruction and learning in Senior High School through the investigation and its relevant issues revealed, and expound the facilitation of Lexical-phrase Approach on vocabulary memory and vocabulary usage in further detail, which can be read in the following five chapters. Chapter â… . Introduction. In this part the author briefs on the significance of vocabulary in language learning, the necessity of vocabulary renovation and the current issues in vocabulary instruction and learning. Chapter â…¡. Review of literature. In this part the author presents the theories of Lexical-phrase Approach and the notion of Knowing a Word. Readers can have a clear idea of the concept, the taxonomy and the function of Lexical-phrase Approach, the functional facilitation of Lexical-phrase Approach in language acquisition as well. Also, the goal of vocabulary instruction and learning and some other related theories are presented in this section. Chapter â…¢. The current research.
