Vocabulary is a main component of human language and plays a great role in theprocess of language learning. A large of number of vocabulary are necessary for Englishlearners to develop their language skills. The importance of vocabulary teaching has alreadybeen fully realized by teachers of middle schools. However, teachers and students’ hardwork doesn’t produce satisfactory results. Some students have a small vocabulary. Althoughsome have a large vocabulary, they still have difficulty in using the words. Lexical chunksteaching has offered a good way of solving the problems.This research is an empirical study. The research choose Grade8students in HeZhengN0.1high school as studying objects, among which class12is the experimental class andclass11is the controlled class, in order to find the impact which the lexical approach andthe word based approach might have on the result of middle school students vocabularylearning. Through the scientific data analysis, we find that:1)About the depth of knowledge of vocabulary, the students in experimental class dobetter than students in controlled class. Through a lexical teaching approach, students’lexical comprehensive ability has been improved to some degree.2) There is no obvious difference on the width of knowledge of vocabulary between thetwo classes before and after the experiment.3) Students in the controlled class have the same result during the two surveys onEnglish vocabulary learning beliefs and strategies, the students in experimental class reflectan apparent change. The English vocabulary learning beliefs and strategies of experimentalclass have been greatly improved.
