| Recently, thanks to the development of humanism and social constructivism, autonomous learning (AL) has been drawing more and more attention among researchers. Social constructivism, especially its whole-person development notion requires student-centeredness and the development of the ability to learn characterized by metacognition. The classroom changes from teacher fronted classroom to a learner-centered place of activities where learners identify, restructure and formulate their goals. Authough in China, many researchers have studied this question, it still calls for further investigation—theoretically, there is vast room for the research on the teaching model for AL; practically, the application of this teaching model becomes more and more urgent. This thesis proposes an AL-teaching model which is strategy training-centered, and puts it into the theoretical framework of Anderson's cognitive theory. In addition, the matters of application are elaborated on, and an experimental study is designed. The results confirm the obvious role it plays in the improvement of learner autonomy (LA).This thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter 1 briefly introduces the background of foreign language learning and teaching research, the research questions and the significance of this research.Chapter 2 is the literature review of AL, including the ways it has been defined, its theoretical bases and its relevant researches and factors.Chapter 3 explores the possibility of fostering AL by establishing the ALTM dependent mainly on strategy training. Theoretically, this chapter lays its emphasis on the elaboration on the relationship between LA and strategy use after approaching into autonomous language learning (ALL).Chapter 4 provides an experimental study to justify the hypothesis: ALTM fosters LA among junior middle school students. Included are: the research method, research process and the research results and result analysis.Chapter 5 presents the conclusion of the thesis: ALTM fosters LA. It also summarizes the major findings of the research, the implication of the research, limitations of the present research and suggestions for the further research. |
