Listening plays a crucial role in English learning, which is wildly recognized. People, abroad and home, have paid more attention to listening study since 1980s, But listening teaching in senior school in China, especially in rural area, had been totally neglected before listening comprehension became a test item in the National Entrance Examination for College. Before 2001, more attention had been paid to cultivating students' reading and writing abilities in English class. The problems in English teaching in China have been that after studying English over ten years students couldn't understand what foreigners said and talked to them. Though listening teaching is paid more attention to, it is still at a stage of research in senior school. The teaching methods and results of listening in senior school are not desirable. In a sense, ineffective listening teaching is one of the direct reasons for students' low listening ability. How to promote student's listening ability is a task worth our efforts.This thesis aims at putting forward practical teaching methods by analyzing the obstacles students have and putting out their solution to prove what skills are the best for the students to enhance their listening ability. A survey was carried out to learn about the problems the students are facing. The subjects in teaching experiment are 215 senior students in Gu Cun Middle School. The instruments included 2 questionnaires and two listening comprehension tests.This thesis mainly discusses and analyzes listening obstacles the senior students have and putting out ways of overcoming them. The whole thesis is divided into seven parts.The first part is the introduction, Chapter One. It illustrates the back- ground of listening and the study aims of this thesis as well. It points out that the practical significance of the research we had in listening teaching.
