It is a fact that the listening comprehension of senior high students from Chongqing rural areas is far behind that of city students. The gap is becoming larger and larger, which will greatly hold back students' learning enthusiasm. How to exert students listening to the largest degree is the goal most teachers have been working on. It is also the focus of this research paper.This paper mainly discusses and analyzes the listening obstacles the senior students have come across and the possible solutions. A survey is carried out to describe the problems the students are facing with. A questionnaire is given to 220 senior students in Yunmen Middle School and Yanjing Middle School.The whole thesis is divided into six parts.Chapter one, the introduction, introduces the National curriculum for English Listening for ordinary school students. A general description of the English-listening teaching background in the rural areas of Chongqing is given. It points out the significance of the research we have been carrying on with.Chapter two is the literature review. It points out listening is an active, productive and interactive process. It includes five stages: discrimination, perception, auditory, memory and decoding message.Chapter three, the major part of this paper, analyses the subjective and objective reasons for the present situation. Through questionnaire we know the current situation for both the senior students' listening studying and the teachers' listening teaching in the rural areas in Chongqing.Chapter four illustrates some wrong doings in listening drills. Both the students' and the teachers' wrong doings are covered.Chapter five, another major part of this paper, deals with strategies to overcome listening obstacles.Chapter six, the conclusion, suggests a combination of teaching strategies with modern teaching devices for improving the English-listening teaching. It calls for teachers and the administrators' special attention to the unique circumstances of rural schools in Chongqing. In the end the author expresses his sincere wishes for comments and opinions.
