Computer-Assisted Instruction is a new mode of Modern Educational Technology. It is an inevitable outcome of the combination of multi-media technique and educational theories since it entered the field of education. As a teaching method, CAI is widely used in classroom teaching of senior middle school, it helps to create a pleasant communication environment, stir up students' motivation and enthusiasm to learn English, construct their cognitive schemata and develop their cross-culture awareness and ability. Besides, it plays a positive role in the respects of developing English teaching resources, opening study outlets, enlarging the classroom teaching capacity, improving study methods, developing students' thinking abilities, and raising teaching efficiency.How can we put the multi-media technology into the teaching practice of senior middle school and use it efficiently. It's an important issue of teaching reform to raise teaching efficiency and quality and make students' learning ability improved with the help of CAI.The thesis is under the guidance of Foreign Language Educational Psychology, the Theory of the Second Language Acquisition, the Theory of Constructivism. Such research methods as literature concordance, observation and questionnaires are used to study the effective approaches towards using CAI in classroom teaching of senior middle school. The preface of this thesis elaborates the research' s background, development and its significance of using CAI in ELT.The first part tells about the basic conceptions of CAI and studies the theory base of CAI through the analysis of the Theory of Constructivism and the Theory of Language Acquisition, which bring enlightenment for FLT. Then it compares the traditional teaching methods with CAI teaching means,and points out the shortage of the traditional teaching methods in the process of language acquisition. The second part arrives at a conclusion that the multi-media techniques will greatly cover the shortage of the traditional teaching in creating the language environment, and that it is necessary and important to carry on CAI in English teaching practice. The third part is the most important one of this thesis. It expounds how to carry on CAI in ELT and puts forwards its valid approaches in detail. Finally, the thesis analyses the data coming from the questionnaires and examinations. Hence, it is concluded that CAI helps a lot in raising teaching efficiency and teaching quality. Meanwhile, it puts forwards the deficiency existed nowadays in CAI teaching and how to make use of the strong point of CAI on the basis of the traditional teaching methods to achieve a better result. This research is to provide a further help for the ELT teachers.
