As we all know, vocational school English teaching aims at fostering students' reading, listening, writing and speaking abilities, and enabling them to use the English language to communicate freely. The focus is on the development of the students' communicative competence. But under the influence of traditional teaching mode, we pay too much effort on imparting the English formal knowledge to the students, ignoring the development of learners' skills, especially the learners' integrated skills, at using the target language. For example, in the course of grammar teaching in vocational school, traditionally, teachers pay too much attention to the explanation of the grammar points. They make the learners master the grammar points by having them do a lot of exercise. But this can't give the students a chance to have a real communication by the grammar points.This paper focuses on introducing and applying task-based approach in vocational school English grammar teaching. Task-based approach is popular in western countries. It believes that foreign language teaching is a course to deal with communicative tasks and class activities should organize by tasks but not by language knowledge or structures. Task-based learning is to "learn in practice". Learners master language point by using it in communication tasks. Task-based learning gives the learners more language input. What's more, it gives the learners more chances to practice. The teacher is not a commander of the class, but an organizer of the real communicative tasks.
