Vocabulary is the most important one of the three major components that constitute English language, and it is the foundation of any kind of communication. No matter how good one's grammar is. if he has no adequate vocabulary to express his own feelings or to understand others' opinions, he still cannot communicate with others in this language. However, vocabulary learning is the most difficult task in students' study. It is, therefore, especially important to study vocabulary learning strategies and its teaching methods. Vocabulary learning strategies consist of metacognitive, cognitive, and socio-affective strategies. By conducting a research into vocabulary learning and teaching, the writer found the application of certain learning strategies could greatly promote vocabulary learning, its consolidation and using. Based on the same research and many years of teaching experience, many vocabulary teaching methods are proposed.The thesis consists of 5 chapters. Chapter One describes the importance of English vocabulary and the reasons for the study of vocabulary learning strategies. Chapter Two provides a review of the theoretical background of vocabulary learning studies both home and abroad. Here, the procedures of vocabulary learning and its related strategies, the classification and concrete description of vocabulary learning strategies are discussed in detail. Chapter Three introduces the methods and designs of the research in terms of the subjects, instruments and the implement procedures. Based on the above review and the survey, Chapter Four introduces many vocabulary teaching methods, and the purposes and significance of each method is also provided in order that the readers can easily put them into practice in their own classroom teaching practice. Chapter Five serves as a summary of the whole thesis.
