M.McCarthy (1990) indicates : "No matter how good one's grammar is and how beautiful one's pronunciation is, but if one has no adequate vocabulary to express one's own feelings or to understand others' opinions, one still cannot communicate with others in this language". Vocabulary is the most important one of the three major components that constitute English language, it is the foundation of any kind of communication. However, vocabulary learning is the most difficult task in students' study. It is, therefore, especially important to study vocabulary learning strategies and the teaching of vocabulary learning strategies. Vocabulary learning consists of metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies, social/affection strategies. Through the research the writer found the application of vocabulary learning strategies could greatly promote vocabulary learning, consolidation and using; there are variations between the applications of successful learners and unsuccessful learners. The application frequency of successful learners' vocabulary learning strategies is higher than unsuccessful learners'. Based on this research and many years' teaching experience, the writer suggests a set of the methods of vocabulary learning strategies teaching.The thesis consists six chapters.Chapter One is the introduction, describing the importance of vocabulary and the study of vocabulary learning strategies. Hypotheses are formed and rationale is discussed. The arrangement of the thesis is also introduced.Chapter Two gives the definition of language learning strategy, and then introduces the study of language learning strategy around the world. The classification and specific description of language learning strategy are introduced. The elements of influencing the formation and application of language learning strategy are analyzed.Chapter Three states the knowledge of vocabulary learning and the study of vocabulary learning worldwide. The steps of vocabulary learning and its related strategies, the classification and specific description of vocabulary learning strategy are discussed in detail.Chapter Four introduces the methods and designs of the research, including thesubjects, instruments and the implement procedures. Some vocabulary learning strategies and data are also introduced. The relation between the vocabulary learning views held by the senior middle school students and the vocabulary size, the relation between vocabulary learning strategy and the vocabulary size are discussed. The successful learners' and unsuccessful learners' vocabulary learning strategies are analyzed.Chapter Five describes the purpose and significance of the teaching of vocabulary learning strategy. The models, principles and steps of the teaching of vocabulary learning strategy are introduced. Many feasible methods of the teaching of vocabulary learning strategy are suggested and designed.Chapter Six summarizes the results, success and disadvantages of the research. Further study of vocabulary is expected.
