This dissertation is an empirical study of writing strategies. It includes two parts: a research report of an investigation and an experiment of writing strategies employed by high school students. The purpose of this study is to find out what kind of writing strategies the high school students use; the frequency of the strategies used by them; what kind of writing strategies correlate significantly with the writing proficiency; whether there is any difference in using the strategies between boy students and girl students, and between high-level students and low-level students; whether the students can improve their writing proficiency if trained with useful writing strategies and how the high school teachers do to improve the students' writing ability.Looking back the theories of Second Language Acquisition ,Learning Strategies, Writing Process and Writing Strategies abroad and home, the author gives her own view on the theory of writing strategies. Based on the theory, the investigation and experiment has been done.Through this empirical study, it has been found that almost all the students consciously employed a variety of writing strategies with different means. The most frequently used strategies are planning and avoidance strategies, while the least one is the rewriting strategy. Girl students used more strategies than boys in planning and mother tongue relying-on strategies, while boy students make more use of proofreading strategy. There is also difference in using the writing strategies between high-level students and low-level students. More high-level students prefer using planning and proof-reading strategies and low-level students like mother tongue relying-on strategy better.The result of the experiment supports the assumption that the students who have been trained with useful writing strategies can improve their writing proficiency. According to this conclusion, the author gives some suggestions on how to teach writing class effectively.The last part of this dissertation is to point out the limitation of the study and discuss the future plan of the research.
