Relevance Theory proposed by Sperber and Wilson is a new method to pragmatics. This theory own more theory supports than any other communication theory. Relevance theory can be widely applied. It can explain various pragmatic phenomena existing in language understanding.First this thesis elaborates the main points of the theory: definition of relevance, relevance principles, laws and models of RT inference, context of relevance theory.The second part of the thesis expounds the feasibility of Relevance Theory applied in Chinese Reading teaching at middle school.The third part of it discusses the application of Relevance Theory applied in Chinese Reading teaching at middle school. The discussion consists of vocabulary, sentence and paragraph, and types of sentences. Relevance Theory has great explanatory power in lexical means and conveying the author's intentions. And it also has great explanatory power in the rhetoric meaning of synecdoche and irony. Relevance Theory can also be used to infer the author's intentions behind the words and the author's communicative intentions in irrelevant descriptions, and the contextual effect of some special sentence types.The last part of the thesis explains the implications of Relevance Theory to Chinese teaching at middle school. Teachers should help students to construct their own schematic knowledge. They should also analyze the text by using the context.
